Gerdau and PPG Architectural Coatings, Inc. receive
Carrollton’s 2015-2016 Environmental Distinction Award.

The City of Carrollton Environmental Services Department recognizes industries that consistently comply with industrial pretreatment and stormwater regulations for a full year. The Department honors the Environmental Distinction Award to industries that have enhanced their pollution prevention operations and shown environmental leadership.

At the December 6 City Council meeting, Mayor Matthew Marchant and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Steve Babick presented the Consistent Compliance Award to nine companies namely: BeautiControl, BuzzBallz, ElectroPlate Circuitry, Gerdau, Image Industries, Quantum Clean, PPG Architectural Coatings, and Texas Finishing Company. From these nine, Gerdau and PPG Architectural Coatings were awarded the Environmental Distinction Award.

Gerdau fabricates 100% recycled steel rods into various products such as shopping cart trays, grills, mattress coils, and shelving. Since 2015 Gerdau was able to recover 841.7 tons of ferrous sulfate crystals descaling operations. Gerdau has also made a significant impact in the Carrollton community by adopting a two-mile stretch of Belt Line Road, donating 442 lbs. of non-perishable food items and toy drive collection for Metrocrest Services, and participation in the Meals on Wheels program.

PPG Architectural Coatings, Inc. manufactures and stores water-based paints. PPG was able to rework more than 300,000 gallons of paint instead of disposing of it as special waste, resulting in $1.8 million in raw material savings. This reduced disposal costs by 95 percent while maintaining product quality. PPG’s community support activities for the North Texas area includes a donation of 462 lbs. of food to the North Texas Food Bank; a monetary donation of $1,000 to local non-profit Bea’s Kids; participation in the Toys for Tots holiday donation; and hosting three Carter Blood Care donation drives.

With a commitment to achieve environmental excellence and to improve the quality and vitality of the community, each company is commended for pollution prevention achievement, commitment to environmental principles, and their leadership in creating a sustainable future in their facilities and in the community.
