Upgrades Are a Dream Come True for Local Carrollton Park
Local youth will soon enjoy a newly remodeled basketball court at Martha Pointer Park thanks to the teamwork from the City of Carrollton, Nancy Lieberman Charities, and Covenant Church in Carrollton. The partnership has resulted in a state-of-the-art Dream Court, a multipurpose play space built in underserved communities so children have a safe area to shoot hoops, socialize, and learn about teamwork and good sportsmanship. That space will be unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, November 20 from 6-7 p.m. at Martha Pointer Park (2100 Rockwood Drive).
Guests at the ceremony will hear from members of Carrollton City Council including Mayor Kevin Falconer, Carrollton PD, and Basketball Hall-of-Famer Nancy Lieberman. Covenant Church, located on Trinity Mills, serves as the Dream Court donor and will be represented by Senior Pastor Stephen Hayes.
“Providing opportunities for police and residents to positively interact is crucial in building long-lasting, constructive relationships,” said newly-named Police Chief Derick Miller. “Carrollton is unique and fortunate to have not only a dedicated public safety team, but also a community of supporters. Projects like the Dream Court are only possible when everyone gets involved, the same is true for a safe and secure environment in which to live.”
The City’s Parks and Recreation and Police Departments worked with both the foundation and the church to provide this Dream Court in the hopes it will foster the relationship between police officers and the communities they serve. The new court in Carrollton is the 19th Dream Court the foundation has opened in 2017 alone.
Lieberman is not only a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall-of-Famer and charities founder, she is a two-time Olympian and made history in 2015 when she was hired by the Sacramento Kings, becoming only the second female assistant coach in NBA history.
