Carrollton Summer Reading Program Kicks Off with Events for All Ages

Carrollton’s Summer Reading Program (SRP): Libraries Rock!™ will run Thursday, June 7 through Thursday, August 16 and include age-specific programs for listeners (0-4), kids (5-9), tweens (10-13), teens (14-18), and adults (19+). Register yourself and your children at — usernames from last year are still valid. Track reading minutes online or ask about physical reading logs to record books and minutes. Participate in the kickoff events and get rewarded for summer reading fun.

“Watch out for some amazing nationally-known and local musicians,” said Kelly Burns, Youth Services Supervisor for the Carrollton Public Library. “We’ve pulled together some fun events for age groups preschool through adult along with diverse reading lists and great prizes for this year’s Summer Reading Program.” 




SRP Kickoff: Family Concert with Jim Gill — Friday, June 8, 2 p.m.

Kick off the City’s SRP with a family concert by award-winning children’s musician Jim Gill on Friday June 8 at 2 p.m. in the Texas Room at the Senior Center (1720 Keller Springs Road) across from Josey Ranch Lake Library. Experience an interactive musical event and prepare to clap, jump, dance, and even sneeze along with Jim whose true art is creating a joyful musical experience for all ages. Bring a blanket so the whole family can relax and enjoy the concert together.

Teen SRP Kickoff: <Press Start> Escape Room — Friday, June 8, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Millionaire Trevor Silver is looking to reward a lucky teen with a mysterious prize, but only if they can solve his book and pop culture-based puzzles. Kick off teen summer reading at Hebron & Josey Library (4220 N. Josey Lane) with this escape room for ages 13-18. Pizza and drinks will be provided. Tween SRP Kickoff: The Trials of Apollo — Tuesday, June 12, 2-3 p.m. or 4-5 p.m.

How do you punish an immortal? By making him a regular teenage boy in New York City. Ages 10-13 are invited to kick off tween summer reading at Hebron & Josey Library with The Trials of Apollo fantasy adventure and mythological fiction novels by Rick Riordan: “The Hidden Oracle,” “The Dark Prophecy,” and “The Burning Maze.” The 4,000-year-old deity, Apollo, must learn to survive in the modern world until he can somehow find a way to regain his father Zeus’ favor. Can you and your friends pass the trials to earn your rightful place in Olympus by testing your Apollo skills? Two identical sessions are offered from 2-3 p.m. and from 4-5 p.m. Space is limited. Register for one session only at beginning Tuesday, May 29.

Read Your Way Through Levels 1-10 and Become a Rock Legend!

Specialized programs include age-appropriate prizes and individualized reading lists. Earn one point for every one minute read. Every 30 points for tweens, teens, and adults; 60 points for listeners; and 120 points for kids earns a drawing ticket for fabulous prize packs. Winners are drawn at the End of Summer Pool Party on Friday, August 17 at Rosemeade Rainforest Aquatic Complex (1334 E. Rosemeade Parkway) and posted online the following day. All participants with at least one hour of logged reading time are invited to attend the pool party. Finishing missions, reading lists, and attending events gains more points as well. Kids (ages 5-9) can use their points to buy extra beads for their brag necklaces from the online READsquared beads store.

“The Carrollton Public Library is excited to offer this year’s Summer Reading Program and events,” Burns said. “The online program makes it easier and more interactive for children and adults to track books and minutes. Now everyone in Carrollton can read with us this summer.”

Each hour of reading gets participants closer to the next level of prizes. Move up a level for every one hour of reading for listeners; two hours of reading for kids, tweens, and teens; or five hours of reading for adults. A prize is given for each level attained. Read your way through 10 levels to receive a certificate of completion and become a rock legend! Take on the super levels above 10 if you dare, and earn more points for prizes.

Prize packs include items such as signed books, gift cards, educational toys, and family fun activities for listeners and kids; Amazon gift cards, backpacks, school supplies, and VR headsets and controllers for tweens and teens; and signed books, an Amazon gift card, a Kindle Fire 7, and a Google Chromecast for adults.
