REMODELS AND ADDITIONS TO SINGLE-FAMILY DWELLINGS

General Information

The remodel of or addition to a single-family dwelling (whether detached or attached) requires a building permit. All construction must comply with the International Residential Code as adopted and amended by the city of Carrollton, as well as the city’s Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance. More specifically, Article VII for detached dwellings and Article VIII for attached dwellings contain specific zoning requirements. When additions, alterations or repairs requiring a permit occur, smoke detectors shall be installed in each sleeping room and at a point centrally located in the corridor or area giving access to each separate sleeping area. Where the wiring is accessible the smoke detectors shall receive their primary power from the commercial service, and be provided with battery backup. Where the wiring is not accessible the smoke detectors may be solely battery operated.
