Food And Consumer Safety Program

The Food and Consumer Safety Programs prevent illness and ensure proper compliance with food handling at all food establishments in Carrollton.  Food Safety Specialists (also called Sanitarians) routinely inspect food service establishments and score them to ensure compliance with food codes.

All food service establishments in Carrollton are mandated to have a Registered Food Service Manager (RFSM) on duty at all times of operation to oversee the food service operations and ensure proper food handling practices.

It is the goal of the Food Safety Program to inspect each food establishment four (4) times a year.  At the time of the inspection the Food Safety Specialist will document any critical or non-critical violations at that food establishment.

A critical violation is more likely than other violations to contribute to food contamination, illness, injury, or cause an environmental health hazard.  In the event the Food Safety Specialist finds a critical violation, immediate action is taken to resolve the health issued to insure the publics health is not put at risk.

A non-critical violation is a violation that does not seriously affect the public health.  Generally, most violations of the food code found in food establishments are non-critical violations.  Any non-critical violations found during an inspection must be corrected by the time of the next inspection.

The Food Safety Specialist will also coordinate with other municipalities, Dallas and Denton County, the Texas Department of State Health Services, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other agencies to investigate all suspected and confirmed foodborne illness reports.

The Food and Consumer Safety Program operates in conjunction with Building Inspections to review the plans of all new food service establishments as well as the remodeling of any current establishment to ensure equipment and facilities meet the criteria for safe handling of food to the community.
