CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY The Citizen Police Academy is designed with Carrollton residents in mind. It is presented for three hours in the evening, one night a week. The program is presented at a city facility, which is conveniently located and very functional. Off-site classes are presented and maps will be available. Information is general in nature and provided as a public service to acquaint you with the Police Department. Talk to officer/ instructors one on one, get answers to the questions you have wanted to ask. The staff of the Carrollton Police Department is ready and willing to share knowledge and experiences with all citizens. When and where... The Citizen Police Academy is held semiannually, beginning in March and September and continuing for fourteen weeks.
Attendance and Curriculum Participants must fill out an application for admission, and be at least 21 years of age to participate. After a screening check, class members will be advised if admitted. Police Chief David James is a supporter of the Citizen Police Academy taking time to welcome students to the classes and to encourage them in this endeavor. Chief James participates with the North Texas Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association whenever the organization visits Carrollton. Class members are introduced to one of the newer officers who will tell how he/she was recruited and hired. Legal issues, gang information, the status of the drug scene, how we investigate accidents, all these crimes are presented by department members. On one evening, the Fire Department hosts, showing their facility and equipment. Another evening is spent at the firing range getting acquainted with the members of the Tactical and K-9 teams, with a second session in which students are allowed to shoot the department's weapons. (Instructors are available for one on one coaching.) Police participants are generous with their time and are willing to answer questions. After completion of the class, members are eligible for membership in the ranks of the alumni association. These people have already shown their dedication by finishing the CPA course. Most are willing to stay involved by teaming with other graduates to carry on the ideals started. Alumni are involved in on-going projects and events involving the department and the association itself. Conferences are held annually and involve alumni and coordinators from all over the state. Join the Citizen Police Academy to learn about your Police Department and its officers. This is an on-going program, presented at no cost to you. Call 972-466-3316 regarding the next starting date.
Why attend? In summary, the Citizen Police Academy is an attempt on the part of the Police Department to acquaint and educate the residents of our city to the duties and responsibilities of their police officers and how you can help. We feel that doing this in a class-room setting with the officers there to answer questions one on one is the best approach. Some people are nervous about talking with police officers, and we hope to make our officers more approachable. What a good way to see how your tax dollars are spent. Come join us next time in the Citizen Police Academy. |
