Training

Successful Telecommunications Dispatcher applicants will attend and complete on the job training which involves classroom training, hands on training with a trainer, and ride-a-longs with police and fire personnel.  Dispatchers must master several phases of training in order to pass probation.

Training topics include:  how to process in-coming 9-1-1 and administrative calls for service, geography, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) functions, radio dispatching and terminology and procedures, map reading, use of law enforcement databases, monitoring and tracking police and fire personnel on the radio and more.

In addition, there are several certifications that must be obtained during training in order to access and utilize the law enforcement databases required for the job and to provide Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), pre-arrival medical protocols the dispatcher uses to assist callers with emergency medical situations.
