Citizen Police Academy

Join the Citizen Police Academy to learn about your Police Department and its officers. This  on-going program is presented at no cost to Carrollton citizens. Information is provided as a public service to acquaint you with the Police Department and build a relationship with the community. The classes are taught by Carrollton police officers in their field of expertise.

Police Chief David James is a supporter of the Citizen Police Academy taking time to welcome students to the classes and to encourage them in this endeavor.

It's a great opportunity to learn everything you've always wanted to know about the police and criminal activity, but were afraid to ask.

Schedule for Classes and Presentations

The Citizen Police Academy is held twice each year, once in the Spring and once in the Fall.  Classes run from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday evenings and continue for approximately 15 weeks. Most classes are presented at a Police Department, located at 2025 E. Jackson Road. Off-site classes are presented at the CPD range and other facilities.

Class 41, Fall 2008           August 14, 2008 through November 20, 2008

                                       Registration Begins:  July 1, 2008

Attendance and Curriculum

Participants must fill out an application for admission, and be at least 21 years of age to participate. After a screening check, class members will be advised if admitted.

Class topics include: recruiting and hiring practices, legal issues, gang information, narcotics investigations, traffic crash investigation, crime scene investigation and many more interesting law enforcement subjects. Another evening is spent at the firing range getting acquainted with the members of the Tactical and K-9 teams, with a second session in which students are allowed to shoot the department's weapons. (Instructors are available for one on one coaching.) Police participants are generous with their time and are willing to answer questions.

How Does Citizen Police Academy Benefit Citizens?

The Citizen Police Academy acquaints and educates residents of our city to the duties and responsibilities of their police officers and how you can help. We feel that doing this in a classroom setting with Carrollton Police instructors is the best approach. Some people are nervous about talking with police officers, and we hope to make our officers more approachable.

Graduates of past Citizen Police Academy sessions formed the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association to continue providing local support. It's a great way to see how your tax dollars are spent! Come join us next time in the Citizen Police Academy. After completion of the class, members are eligible for membership in the the alumni association. These people have already shown their dedication by finishing the CPA course. Alumni are involved in on-going projects and events involving the department and the association itself.
