From
a trickle to a steady flow.
Thanks to the help of more than 150 volunteers, a steady stream of storm drain markers are flowing into neighborhoods across Carrollton. Members of cub scouts, weeblos, girl scouts, local businesses, and concerned citizens are pitching in to deliver a pollution prevention message to our community. Since the program began in October 2000, almost 3000 plastic markers in English and Spanish have been placed on Carrollton's curb storm water inlets. The markers bear a "Don't Dump" message reminding people that storm water drains directly into the nearest waterway through the storm inlet. A common misconception is that storm sewers are like sanitary sewers, which carry wastewater to a treatment plant. People don't realize that they are polluting a nearby creek when they dump, discard, or wash contaminants down a storm water inlet.
Promoting Public Awareness
The
main goal of marking storm drains is to promote public awareness about water
pollution. The efforts to mark storm drains in Carrollton are part of a
region wide public education campaign. Reports from other North Texas
cities reveal that storm drain markers have proven to be an effective means of
informing people about water pollution.
If your group or you would like to help spread the word in your neighborhood you can call the Environmental Quality Division at (972) 466-3060. We will provide all the materials you may need. It is easy and takes about two to three minutes to lay a marker in place. This is a great way for you to help your community, the environment, and to be a part of the solution to our pollution problems.
