President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in 1863 and the Juneteenth celebration began in Galveston in 1865 when federal troops arrived to confirm the end of slavery. Freed slaves held their first celebrations in 1866, and Juneteenth has been celebrated annually on June 19 throughout the United States. Texas became the first state to make Juneteenth an official holiday in 1979. The day was declared an official federal holiday in 2021, and was the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was officially designated in 1983.
