Carrollton Public Library Offers Free Health Workshop and Classes for Medicare and Social Security

The Carrollton Public Library is hosting a free Community Health Workshop, presented by the UNT Health Science Center Saturday, September 22 from 11 a.m. to noon at Hebron & Josey Library (4220 N. Josey Lane) and offering four free classes in October, two for Medicare and two for Social Security, in a continuing effort to offer new programs that help residents plan for their family’s future.

The classes will address the ins and outs of Medicare and Social Security. Are You Ready for Medicare? is on Wednesday, October 3 from 2:30-4 p.m. at Josey Ranch Lake Library (1700 Keller Springs Road) and on Wednesday, October 10 from 2:30-4 p.m. at Hebron & Josey Library (4220 N. Josey Lane). Social Security – What Do You Know? is at Hebron & Josey Library Tuesday, October 9 from 1:30-3:30 p.m and Tuesday, October 16 from 1:30-3:30 p.m at Josey Ranch Lake Library. No registration is necessary for the classes, but registration for the Community Health Workshop is required.


Community Health Workshop – Saturday
Sept. 22, 11 a.m. to noon at Hebron & Josey Library

A representative from UNT Health Science Center will present a workshop to promote health literacy. Attendees will explore reliable resources for health information online, learn about the National Library of Medicine’s resource for information on health topics, drugs and supplements, videos and tools, and lab test information, including access to a medical encyclopedia, and discuss health concerns within the community. Health information is also available in multiple languages.

The Carrollton Public Library was one of 10 libraries granted the opportunity to host a UNT Community Health Station for one year. The station, located at Josey Ranch Lake Library, is a pre-loaded iPad containing numerous applications related to health issues in addition to links to emergency information, medical terms, health care organizations, and a number of science and health applications for kids to play. Libraries with the highest usage after one year will be able to keep one of the stations.

Are You Ready for Medicare? – Wednesday
Oct. 3, 2:30-4 p.m. at Josey Ranch Lake Library
Oct. 10, 2:30-4 p.m. at Hebron & Josey Library

Medicare can be confusing and overwhelming. A certified senior advisor (CSA) will discuss Medicare eligibility and enrollment periods, late enrollment penalties and exceptions, and income-related Medicare premium adjustments. There will be an overview of Medicare A, B, C, and D, including prescription drug coverage changes for 2018 to 2020. Learn how Medicare Advantage Plans (PPOs versus HMOs) compare to Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap). Information will educate senior citizens about their rights and choices for original Medicare, Medicare Supplement Plans, and end of life planning with an explanation of the options available in this information-only program.

Social Security – What Do You Know? – Tuesday
Oct. 9, 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Hebron & Josey Library
Oct. 16, 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Josey Ranch Lake Library

A certified personal accountant (CPA) will present information on individual and family strategies for claiming benefits. Learn when to claim Social Security to maximize lifetime benefits, how working affects benefits, the strategies involved in making a claim, what to know about survivor benefits, what causes Social Security taxation, and how to reduce or eliminate taxation. A review of new filing rules will also be covered.
