Carrollton’s Inaugural Chalk Art Festival Adds More Artist Incentives
Cement your fame as a chalk artist and let the sidewalk be your canvas at Carrollton’s free inaugural Chalk Art Festival on Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Josey Ranch Lake (1700 Keller Springs Road).
Bring the whole family for live music, food, a bounce house for the kids, a few artisans displaying their crafts, and a free area for young aspiring chalk-artists-to-be.
There is no fee to compete as an artist, and only 20 spots remain. First and second-place prizes will be awarded in three categories: amateur, student, and professional.
Artists (ages 8+) and students (high school juniors, seniors, and college students) who have not sold their artwork may enter as amateurs and will have a choice of chalking either an area 2-by-2 feet or 4-by-4 feet; artists (ages 13+) who have sold their artwork must enter as a professional and will have a choice between chalking an area 4-by-4 feet or 6-by-6 feet.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the first and second-place winners in each category. First-place amateur will receive $200; second-place amateur will receive $100; first and second-place students will each receive $100; first-place professional will receive $300 and a drop-in pass to Hull Art Academy (1404 W. Hebron Parkway Suite 100) valued at $30; and second-place professional will receive $200 and a drop-in pass to Hull Art Academy. Artists can only enter and win in one category. Checks will be cut the week following the competition and sent to the winners.
Each competitor will begin with the same amount of chalk and may swap out for more colors as needed, or artists may bring their own solid form chalk pastels. No liquid or oil pastels, tempera paint, acrylic paint, or fixative of any kind is allowed. Preregistration is highly recommended as space is limited.
The check-in time for artists is 9:30 a.m.; an area of pavement will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis; the Chalk Art Festival is officially open at 10 a.m. and artists may begin their masterpieces; judging begins at 2 p.m.; and, the winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m. Preregistration is available online at cityofcarrollton.com/signupnow under the Community section.
Bring the whole family to the festivities and enjoy live music from New Horizon Band Dallas’ newest JazzLand group. Feed your cravings with nachos, pickles, snow cones, cotton candy, and beverages from a local food vendor. Lawn chairs are encouraged for spectators.
