Carrollton Encourages Precautions for a Safe Independence Day Weekend

Post Date:07/02/2020 7:59 PM
The City of Carrollton and Carrollton Fire Rescue remind citizens that it is illegal to possess, manufacture, store, sell, handle, or discharge fireworks within Carrollton city limits, with a fine of up to $2,000 to any person caught doing so. While all fireworks are illegal, Class C consumer fireworks include most over-the-counter items such as bottle rockets, roman candles, sparklers (which burn at over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit), spinners, and sparkle fountains.

According to the latest Fireworks Annual Report released by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 10,000 people for injuries related to fireworks in 2019, 73 percent of which occurred between June 21 and July 21. Children younger than 15 accounted for 36 percent of those injured. In 2018, fireworks caused an estimated 19,500 fires and $105 million in direct property damage.

The City’s Community Fireworks Display typically held on July 4 will be moved to Veterans Day this year due to social distancing concerns. The new date for the fireworks display will allow the City to continue to provide a high-quality fireworks show for residents, while honoring our heroes for their service and sacrifice and showcasing the City’s new Veterans Memorial Plaza.

There are still some great ways to celebrate Independence Day in the City of Carrollton, such as tuning in to the Carrollton Parks & Recreation Facebook page on Friday, July 3 from 12-1 p.m. for a virtual Fourth of July concert featuring patriotic music by Marty Ruiz and Anne Hinson.

Have a fun and safe Fourth of July, Carrollton. Remember to practice social distancing and don a cloth face covering when in public spaces.
