U-Haul_Texas-as-No-1-imageTexas achieved the Top U.S. Growth State honors, according to 2021 transactional data compiled for the annual U-Haul Growth Index.

According to the national statistics, customers coming to Texas in one-way trucks rose 19 percent year-over-year from 2020 as national moving traffic surged. Arriving customers accounted for 50.2 percent of all one-way U-Haul traffic in Texas during 2021 to make it the leading state for netting do-it-yourself movers.

“Everything is bigger in Texas, and that includes the migration of DIY movers in U-Haul trucks,” U-Haul Company of North East Dallas President Zane Rowland said. “People are moving here from all over the U.S. because they know Texas is thriving. Jobs, affordable homes … you name it, Texas has it.”

The Lone Star State reclaims its number one status held from 2016-2018 and can also boast five top cities in U-Haul’s list of the Top 25 U.S. Growth Cities in 2021. Carrollton (25), Austin (16), College Station-Bryan (7), Grapevine (15), and Richardson (22) made the cut with some of the biggest gains occurring in the suburbs around the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, according to the company.

“Carrollton is consistently ranked one of the best places to live,” Rowland said. “Located in the heart of the DFW area, it is a vibrant but still affordable place to raise a family. There are plenty of parks to enjoy and the schools are highly ranked. Carrollton has some of the safest neighborhoods. So it’s no surprise to me that it’s a top destination for people relocating in our U-Haul trucks.”

The migration data is compiled from well over two million one-way U-Haul truck customer transactions that occur annually across more than 23,000 U-Haul truck- and trailer-sharing locations. U-Haul calculates each state or city’s standing by the net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks entering versus leaving that state or city in the same calendar year.

While U-Haul says their migration trends do not correlate directly to population or economic growth, they say the growth index is an effective gauge of how well states are both attracting and maintaining residents.

The list was posted in January in a web article “U-Haul Reveals Top Growth States of 2021.” To view U-Haul’s state and city listings, visit myuhaulstory.com.
