Members of the City of Carrollton Parks and Recreation Department earned 2nd place at the annual Texas Recreation and Parks Society (TRAPS) North Park Maintenance Rodeo on Wednesday, October 11. Parks - TRAPS Rodeo

This year’s event was hosted by the City of Grapevine and welcomed parks and recreation departments from all around the north Texas region. Cities competed in various events that showcased daily skills used on the job.

Several Carrollton staff members shined in the competition. Kevin Burkman and Kevin Arnold earned 1st place in the Irrigation Assembly event with a time of one minute and 59 seconds, Sam Gonzales placed 4th in the Zero Turn Mower obstacle with a time of 17 seconds, and in the Backpack Blower contest, Oscar Rodriguez placed 3rd with a time of 24 seconds and Ruben Colmenero took home 1st place with a time of 22 seconds.

Carrollton placed 2nd overall out of 26 cities. Five out 11 Carrollton participants have advanced to the next level to compete at the state competition in February.

“Although this competition may seem unusual, it allows parks staff to put their daily skills up against some of the best from other cities. It was a very tight competition and many missed the cut off by merely seconds,” said Athletics Manager Kim Bybee. “Carrollton’s success in this competition demonstrates the commitment that employees have for their jobs at every level in the organization, as well as the pride they feel for our City.”

TRAPS is an educational and professional organization that seeks to advance the profession of parks, recreation, and leisure services in the state of Texas. Carrollton’s involvement with TRAPS allows employees to stay on top of best practices and innovative tools that are in use across the state.
