Reducing Conflicts with Nesting Birds Safely

Each year, Carrollton faces challenges from egrets and herons nesting in residential areas. While initially only a few birds may be noticed, hundreds can arrive suddenly during the early spring months of March and April to begin nesting.

Although this natural cycle is beautiful, it can create problems for residents, including:

  • Loud noise
  • Strong odors
  • Large amounts of bird droppings on streets, sidewalks, cars, mailboxes, and other public or private property

Why City Staff Cannot Remove Nests During Nesting Season

These birds are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This law prevents City staff from removing nests while birds are present. The City depends on residents to proactively manage nesting issues.

How Residents Can Help

To protect your trees and property, consider the following steps:

  1. Thin tree canopies
    • Allow sunlight to reach between limbs and neighboring trees
  2. Remove old nesting material
    • Do this before birds arrive
  3. Use visual deterrents
  4. Gently scare birds

Reporting Bird Activity

Note: Proactive reporting helps the City track bird activity and plan for future nesting seasons.

Additional Tips

  • Keep a safe distance from nesting birds
  • Avoid harming the birds or their nests
  • Share information with neighbors to prevent conflicts
