Retaining Walls

General Information

A permit is required for retaining walls when it is over four (4) feet in height, measured from the top of the wall to the bottom of the footing, whether exposed or covered.

Retaining walls that face or have exposure to any public thoroughfare must be constructed of brick or stone.

Plans submittal requirements

  • A copy of a site plan or of the property with dimensions indicating the location of the retaining wall on the property
  • A Property Survey plan with dimensions indicating how the structure will be constructed. Plans shall be designed, signed and sealed by a Professional Engineer registered in the State of Texas
  • If a contractor is used, that contractor must be registered in the City of Carrollton


An inspection needs to be scheduled upon completion of work.

Applications and Fees

A permit fee is required, and an application must be completed and submitted to the Building Inspection department. Please call 972-466-3225 with any questions.
