The Fire Marshal's Office performs regular fire code inspections on Carrollton businesses. These inspections provide a reasonable level of life safety and property protection from hazards and provides safety to fire fighters and emergency responders during emergency operations.

Commercial/business inspections also include plan reviews for new construction to ensure compliance with the latest versions of the International Fire Code and continuing fire safety inspection throughout the life of the buildings. 

Will the Fire Marshal's office inspect a building by request?

Yes,  the Fire Marshal responds to requests for walkthroughs of businesses. The Fire Marshal will also respond to complaints at locations with known or suspected fire hazards.

Below is a list of the most common fire code violations found during commercial business inspections.

Housekeeping

• Combustible materials stored in mechanical rooms and electrical equipment rooms.
• Combustible materials shall not be stored within two feet of the ceiling or 18 inches below sprinkler heads.
• Storage is not permitted within three feet of electrical panels.
• Combustibles shall not be stored within three feet of heat producing equipment.
• Storage is not permitted within three feet of fire protection equipment.

Exits

• Exits and exit corridors shall clear and unobstructed.
• Exit doors shall be unlocked when the building is occupied.
• Exit signs shall be illuminated and back-up batteries working properly.
• Emergency lights shall be operational.

Fire Protection Equipment

• Fire sprinkler systems shall be serviced annually.
• Fire alarm systems shall be serviced annually.
• Fire extinguishers shall be serviced annually.
• Kitchen hood suppression systems shall be serviced semi-annually.
  • Provide a K Class fire extinguisher for cooking operations. 
• Fire protection equipment rooms labeled.

Exterior

• Building number shall be provided on the side of the building fronting the street
  • Building numbers shall be minimum 10 inches tall and contrasting the background
• Suite number shall be provided above all doors (Front, Back & Sides)
  • Suite numbers shall be minimum 4 inches tall and contrasting the background
• Suite number shall be provided on the gas and electrical meters.
• Combustible storage of waste items shall not be permitted on the outside of the building.
• Fire lanes shall be maintained clear and unobstructed.
• Fire hydrants shall be operational and unobstructed with a minimum of three feet of clearance.
• FDC (Fire Department Connection) shall be maintained operational and unobstructed with a minimum of three feet of clearance.
• Current keys to each business are not provided in Knox Box. 

General 

• Extensions cords shall not be used for permanent power or operations.
• Power strips shall not be connected together (daisy chained).
• All breakers in electrical panels shall be labeled and empty positions filled.
• Fire rated assemblies shall be maintained.
• Dispense flammable and combustible liquids in a well vented area using safety cans.
• Flammable and combustible liquids shall be property stored.
• Occupant load shall be posted near the entrance in a conspicuous location.

Carrollton Fire Rescue responds to requests for home safety inspections. They  also respond to complaints at locations with known or suspected fire hazards.

Knox Box 3200 series is acceptable for single tenant buildings less than 10,000 sq. feet.

Knox Vault 4400 series is required for multi-tenant buildings and buildings >10,000 sq. ft

Knox Key Switch KS-3502 is required for any electrically powered gates. 

Knox padlock model #3770 is required for any manual gates that cross a fire lane.

After receiving your KNOX Products, contact the Fire Prevention Division to schedule someone to come out and meet you to put the keys in the box.
