Returning Items
You may return checked out items to EITHER Carrollton Public Library location.
As of August 24, 2021, the indoor and outdoor book drops CHECK IN returned items immediately if inserted ONE item at a time as directed, removing them from your account.
The following items MUST be returned in person to staff at the Service Desk OR at the drive-up window (except for Tool Kits):
- Hotspots
- Board games
- Early Literacy Kits
- STEM Kits
- Tool Kits (ONLY at the Service Desk)
- Interlibrary Loans
Book Drop Locations
- Josey Ranch Lake Indoor
On the right side in the lobby BEFORE the entrance doors with the gate - Josey Ranch Lake Outdoor
In the front of the building behind the flag poles - Hebron & Josey Indoor
To the right inside the Library AFTER the entrance doors with the gate - Hebron & Josey Outdoor
On the south side of the building (facing Hebron)
It is a good idea to double-check that returned items have all been checked in by logging in to your account OR by using the Account feature on a self check machine
Item Returned in Book Drop Still on Account
Submit the Library Card and Account Help form to report any returned title(s) still on your account. Let staff know in person at the Service Desk if you are in the Library.
Notices
Failure to receive notices does not relieve the borrower of the responsibility for returning materials on time. Return items on or before the due date to avoid having your Library services limited.
Methods
All notices are EMAILED to your Primary Email1.
Add this email address below to your mail's contacts or allowed list to ensure emails reach your inbox
(The email address above is an image, so you cannot copy it)
Billed notices are also sent in the postal mail to the address listed in your account.
1The new Library System only sends notices to ONE email address. Your Primary Email is the first email that was listed in your account in the old Library System. Any other email from the old system will be in the Alternate Address section as your Alternate Email.
Log in to your account to see what email you provided to the Library. You can update the email directly in Your Contact Information to update it in the system
Note: the Library software does not support sending notices to your mobile phone's email address.
Notices about Library card renewal are sent from the email address below. Also, add it to your mail's contacts or allowed list to ensure you are notified if your card is automatically renewed or for card expiration reminder notices.

Automatic Renewal Notices
Starting December 20, 2022, eligible items automatically renew FIVE DAYS BEFORE the due date - up to 3 times - unless a restriction blocked renewing.
The new due date for automatically renewed items will be 26 days from the automatic renewal date which will equal 3 weeks from the ORIGINAL DUE DATE.
The Automatic Renewal notice lists which items renewed with the new dues dates and also lists any items that could NOT be automatically renewed with the reason renewal failed.
New due dates can also be viewed in your online account.
Courtesy Reminder Notices
Reminder notices for items borrowed from the Library not automatically renewed are emailed:
- 5 days BEFORE item is due
- Day item is due
Overdue Notices
Overdue notices are sent the following number of days after the due date
- 4 day
- 14 days
- 21 days
Billed Notices
Printed billed notices will be mailed in the postal mail in addition to the new email notices being sent.
- 25 days after item due
Overdue Items
Effective September 15, 2021, an overdue item blocks you from:
- Checking out,
- Renewing, including automatic renewals,
once it is four-days overdue.
When overdue items are checked in by the book drops or staff, those services are automatically restored. You may also contact the Library to see if your overdue items are eligible for renewal by staff since renewal will also remove the block.
Items 25 Days Overdue
When an item is 25 days overdue, you are mailed a bill for the cost of the item plus a $5 processing fee.
Return the billed items within 120 days to avoid paying item costs.
Search everywhere for the items before paying. Once lost item costs are paid, no refunds are issued, even if you find the items and want to return them.
If the billed amount is $10 or more, then the Library suspends your use of all Library books, materials, and services per Carrollton Code of Ordinances Sec. 132.17 E
Items 120 or More Days Overdue
At 120 days after the due date, the bill for lost items is final.
Lost/Damaged Items
If you lose or damage an item you checked out, visit or call the Library at 972-466-4800 to discuss any charges. Charges for lost or damaged items are based on the cost of the item at the time it was purchased.
Helpful hint: Renew the item, if possible, while you continue looking for it.
But I Returned That...
Helpful Tip:
Checking your account online or on a self check machine immediately after return to confirm all items placed in a book drop are checked in off your account will help you avoid this situation.
Tell staff at the desk or submit the Library Card and Account Help form to report any returned title(s) still on your account.
If the item you thought you returned is not found in the Library, then it will be placed on "Claims Returned" status for 30 days to allow time for you to continue looking at home and for staff to look again in the Library. If the item is not found within 30 days, it is declared "Lost" and payment will be due.
Helpful hints:
- Insert ONE ITEM at a time in the book drop as directed by the sign so all items can be checked in
- Check beneath your car seats, under beds, in school backpacks, in closets, in drawers, and in bookshelves
