Common Automatic Disqualifications for Employment:

  • Non U.S. Citizen

  • Being younger than 21 years of age on the date of the TCOLE Police Officer Certification Exam

  • Any Class B Misdemeanor (within the past ten years) or higher conviction (at any time) including deferred adjudication, community supervision, and/or probation

  • Being currently charged with any criminal offense for which conviction would be a bar to licensure

  • Ever having been convicted or placed on community supervision in any court of an offense involving family violence as defined under Chapter 71, Texas Family Code

  • Being prohibited by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle

  • Being prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition

  • Dismissal from public service due to misconduct by the candidate

  • Failure to have a stable employment record

  • Any applicant with a failure to have a satisfactory driving record will not be considered for employment with the Carrollton Police Department. For the purpose of this directive an unsatisfactory driving history is considered to be: Evidence to support an unsatisfactory driving record may be in the form of, but not limited to, any applicant's admissions, defensive driving courses, driver license returns, and local records checks

  • Failure to hold a valid drivers license and be able to obtain a valid Texas Driver's License if their current license is issued by another state

  • Any applicant who has used any illegal substance, or substances with potential of abuse, such as prescription drugs, shall be dealt with on a case-by-case basis

  • Applicants who are unable to testify as a witness in a criminal court case

Body Modifications:

Employees are prohibited from having body modifications on any part of the hands (below the cuff of a long sleeve shirt), neck, face, or head, with the following exceptions:

  • Tattoo in the style of one wedding band on the left-hand ring finger
  • Professional style permanent or semi-permanent facial makeup on the eyebrows, eyelids (liner), cheeks, and lips 

Failure to Meet One of the Following Educational or Experience Requirements:

To be eligible for hire, applicants must meet one of the following education and/or experience requirements at the time of hiring or appointment:

College Credit Only

-Sixty (60) or more college credit hours toward a degree.

  • Credits must be from an accredited college or university
  • Developmental or remedial courses do not count
  • Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA

Reduced College Credit + Experience

-Forty-five (45) college credit hours plus one of the following:

  • At least 2 years as a sworn peace officer, or
  • At least 2 years of active-duty U.S. military service with an Honorable Discharge, or
  • At least 2 years of full-time employment with the Carrollton Police Department, or
  • At least 4 Good/Satisfactory years in the Reserve or National Guard

Experience Only

-One of the following:

  • At least 4 years of active-duty U.S. military service with an Honorable Discharge
  • At least 4 years as a sworn peace officer
  • At least 6 Good/Satisfactory years in the Reserve or National Guard
  • At least 3 years of continuous employment with the City of Carrollton. We are hiring for Detention Officers

Additional Requirements

  • All college credits must meet TCOLE Rule 211.1 accreditation standards
  • Experience used to qualify cannot be combined across categories
  • All experience must be continuous (no breaks in service)
  • Qualifications must be met by the date of the Civil Service examination
