Youth in Government Commission

Are you a high school student interested in leadership, community involvement, or learning how local government works? The City of Carrollton Youth in Government Commission (YGC) offers students an opportunity to experience local government firsthand and make their voices heard.

Through the program, selected students will gain hands-on experience participating in City advisory board meetings. Students will step into the role of an advisory board member for one scheduled meeting of the Parks & Recreation Board, Library Board, Neighborhood Advisory Commission, and the Museum and Historic Advisory Committee.

During their assigned meeting, students will have the opportunity to:

• Participate in discussions and review agenda topics
• Share their ideas and perspectives on matters affecting the community
• Provide feedback and recommendations to City staff and advisory board members
• Learn how City advisory boards support local government and the community

The experience will conclude with participation in a Carrollton City Council meeting, where students will see local government in action and be formally recognized for completing the program.

Who Can Apply?

The Youth in Government Commission is open to students who meet the following requirements:

• Currently enrolled in grades 9–12
• Attend a public or private high school located within the City of Carrollton
• Reside within the City of Carrollton
• Maintain good academic standing
• Demonstrate an interest in civic engagement, leadership, or community involvement
