Maintaining or Restoring Water Quality in Buildings with Low or No Use

The EPA has released recommendations for maintaining or restoring water quality in buildings with low or no use. These recommendations include the following steps to prepare the building’s water system while the business is closed and before the business reopens:

  • Review the potential impact that the degraded water quality might have on building occupants.

  • Inspect the building. Review and understand the plumbing configuration in the building.

  • Flush the building's plumbing system regularly. Drain and clean water storage facilities and hot water heaters.

  • Consider contacting the public health department for the County you reside in for assistance if you have specific concerns or to determine if any local requirements are necessary prior to reopening.

  • Follow appropriate regulations and policies for worker safety and health while performing all activities.

As a first step, we will be creating "Safe to Work and Shop" kits specifically for small businesses who reopen in compliance with the Governor’s orders, to help them do so with some safety tools.
